Objective:
Create a simple, stand-alone virtualization host using only directly-attached storage and a simple Ethernet LAN using XenServer 6.5.
Resources:
Hardware:
Any standard x86_64 computer with 1 Ethernet PIF.
Software:
XenServer, Version 6.5
IP-Based Services:
This tutorial requires the following IP-based services to already be available:
Discussion:
While this is a very simple scenario it does illustrate a few very practical use cases: The use of virtualization to consolidate existing IP services onto a single piece of hardware or to expand IP services using existing hardware.
This Tutorial makes the standard set of assumptions:
- The DAS of the virtualization platform has enough capacity to host all of the guests’ VDI’s.
- The available memory of the virtualization platform has enough capacity to host all of the guests plus 2 GB of RAM for the hypervisor.
- The virtualization platform’s network uplink and the network infrastructure both have enough capacity for all of the guests’ network demands.
